Denver & Rio Grande Western #489 leads Cumbres & Toltec Scenic #487 up Cumbres Pass with a long tourist train. This train is sold out on this day due the spectacular fall foliage in the Rocky Mountains. D&RGW #489 is really a C&TS locomotive, but it has been lettered Rio Grande for a special photo charter that would depart the next day from Chama.
