Remarks & Notes |
The 520' Frankenstein Trestle in New Hampshire's Crawford Notch is one of the most famous and spectacular locations on the former Maine Central Subdivision where the Conway Scenic Railroad now runs their "Notch Train." The trestle is not named for Mary Shelly's fictional monster but rather for Godfrey Frankenstein, an Ohio artist from the 1800s. The dynamic brakes of the 1960s EMD locomotives could be heard echoing through the mountains as the engineer carefully throttled the train down to prepare for the steep grade down to Bartlett. |
