The eastbound California Zephyr works its way up the Spanish Fork Canyon east of Thistle, Utah in on May 27,1987. Just over four years before and a few miles upstream, a massive mudslide created a huge lake, which eventually breached the mudslide and wiped out the town of Thistle. Parts of US Route 6 and the Rio Grande mainline were also destroyed, and a major relocation of both commenced as soon as was practical. The rear of the train is leaving the old alignment. A bridge abutment from the original line can also be seen above the second baggage car. The old and new alignments of Route 6 are also readily visible.
