Remarks & Notes |
Searchlights below sea level! With their numbers ever dwindling all across the country, in favor of the new LED tri-lights, a handful of venerable old Union Switch and Signal searchlights can still be found on Union Pacific's Yuma Subdivision in the Coachella Valley. The sidings at Mortmar and Mecca as well as the end of double track at Thermal are still guarded by searchlights, intermediates between Mecca and Thermal are also searchlights. Located 187' below sea level a hot eastbound Z train approaches the searchlight installation at the west end of Mecca where an old SP cantilever signal bridge governs westbound movements. The classic cantilever is one of a precious few still in service in the state of California. |
