Remarks & Notes
It appears one of the locomotives in the 1st swing help has developed teething problems on the 3% above Pando. Two crew members have the doors open trouble shooting a problem on the second motor. There was lots of students in Minturn in 1995 so the help likely had a three or even 4 man crew. Train was still moving at jogging speed as it passed me. The brown 100 ton BN hoppers give a clue about this train. At the time a large number of the coal trains on Tennessee Pass were reloaded taconite trains. This meant the cars would head west to Utah with iron ore for Geneva Steel, and back east with loads of Colorado or Utah coal for the Midwest. Most of the ore trains came off the Wisconsin Central. This train appears to be one of the rare re-loaded trains that was originally interchanged off the Burlington Northern in Denver. The loaded ore train then likely went west up the Moffat to Utah.... These moves were not common. I have only seen one picture of these cars with ore on the Moffat. If anyone has photos of one of the monsters going west up the Moffat please post! It must have been quite a sight to see an iron ore train tackle the Moffat Road...
