Remarks & Notes
Last Light at Arrowhead Junction - [2016 Summer Solstice +12 Study] - A westbound stack train from Needles climbs the grade out of the Colorado River Valley towards the summit at Goffs where it will roll down the Fenner Valley and into the Bristol Salt Pan at Amboy California. Here, the train is beautifully contrasted against the sharp peaks of the Dead Mountains near Ibis as it approaches the grade crossing of US Highway 95 where it meets Goffs Road (Old US 66) at a place called Arrowhead Junction on the map. This particular view was inspired by a photo that Ron Flannery took at this spot about 25 years ago showing the characteristic twin peak landmark of the Dead Man Mts (to the left in the photo) and providing this stunning panoramic view of the topography in the Eastern Mojave. At this spot we are about 17 highway miles from Needles and the Arizona border with the closest track mile marker being 595 (as numbered running west from El Paso Junction). This image is unique for me in that the summer solstice falling in the middle of the hot summer is not a time that I am normally running around unforgiving the Mojave seeing as how the temperature when this photo was taken was hovering around 102 F as the sun was beginning to set. If you chose to venture out into this area in the hot part of the year, drive a very dependable vehicle (two or more are preferable) and take lots of water with you because most of the Needles Sub has spotty and/or no cell service, desolate roads and being stuck out here for even a few hours is usually be fatal.
