Remarks & Notes
Norton, VA to Corbin, KY through freight number 66 drops downgrade at Hagans, VA, diverting from the original Cumberland Valley Division main line via Rose Hill, Ewing, Cumberland Gap and Middlesboro to the switchback that will take it 109 feet to the bottom and 90 degrees to the right before going through the long tunnel on the "CC&O Connection" to the new (1930) route via Loyall, KY. Even though it was 17 miles longer, the original route had some seriously limiting bridges, plus it didn't go through coal-rich Harlan County, KY---a place that would generate untold millions of tons of bituminous to route via the switchback in subsequent years.
