Frostburg Arrival. After an hour-long struggle up the steep grades out of Cumberland, Western Maryland Consolidation #734 arrives at the station in Frostburg with a mixed freight.
Originally built back in 1891 by the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad, this station handled passenger traffic on the line between Cumberland and Piedmont, West Virginia until the early 1940s. Dead ahead of the train you see here is the Frostburg Turntable, and west of that is the tunnel that the line took UNDER the city of Frostburg. Although the tunnel is no longer in use, the station building and turntable represent the western terminus of today's Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The tourist trains stop here and typically allow passengers time to walk into the city of Frostburg, have lunch and then return for the trip back to Cumberland.
