The Jersey Central’s last purchase of new freight power was twelve SD35’s in 1965. Nine secondhand SD40’s from the B&O rounded out the CNJ’s second generation freight roster, and together they were present on most road freights for the last years of the railroad. Intermodal service isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when the CNJ is mentioned, but there was run-through service with the B&O and with the EL in later years, Here one of the SD35’s, now remarked for successor Conrail, gets a chance to stretch its legs as it leads a westbound TV train toward Horseshoe Curve at CP Slope in Altoona.
