Remarks & Notes
One of the scenic highlights of the eastern United States is the Lehigh River Gorge north of Jim Thorpe PA. Here, steep hills (for the east at least) were cleaved by the Lehigh River. In the 1800's two railroads came through here fighting for the coal trade and to this day there are still two companies. However, it is the Reading & Northern that still has seasonal passenger trains on their tracks. The image shows one of those trains being pulled by R&N's elegant (and loud!) Baldwin 4-6-2 Pacific No. 425 as it approaches the Lehigh Gorge. When processing this image, I was taken by it's resemblance to the heroic scenery paintings of the 1800's. Those were meant to show the glory of nature while relegating the hand of man to relative insignificance. So for as big and loud as No. 425 is, it truly is dwarfed by God's Greatness here.

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
