Sunnyside at Deep River Creek. The Valley Railroad's New Haven Mikado #3025 charges northbound across the trestle at Deep River Creek with the last of the day's Santa Specials, on Thanksgiving Weekend.
The Valley Railroad operates on 7 miles of the former New York, New Haven & Hartford's Connecticut Valley Line. Running along the shores of the mighty Connecticut River, this popular tourist line crosses numerous estuaries, the widest of which is the one seen here. It's been years since I managed a sunny shot here. The lighting at this location is arguably at its very best in late November and December, but alas, the sun rarely seems to be out when I am visiting during these times. The 3025 has now been in service for 4 years and I can't tell you how many times I've tried for this shot in that time, only to be skunked by clouds. Fortunately, the last day of Thanksgiving Weekend 2015 turned out to be the charm. Clear sky, pretty light, nice, white plume!
