The Susquehanna’s bicentennial RS1 spends the weekend with a GP18 at the road’s Little Ferry, New Jersey engine terminal. The NYS&W’s diesel roster, originally a group of mid-1940’s Alco switchers and road switchers, was bolstered with three GP18’s in 1962. The EMD’s and a few Alco’s managed to handle the Susquehanna’s traffic as it plunged into bankruptcy. Later in the year that this photo was taken, the Delaware Otsego would take over the operations of the NYS&W, transforming it from a broken-down short line to a regional force hauling stack trains. The 252 served the Susquehanna through it all, from pulling trains to the L&NE interchange at Hainesburg Junction to providing local service on the newly-acquired L&HR main line from Sparta Junction.
