Remarks & Notes |
CW running classic Southern style with long hood forward on return trip from the new end of the line in Broadway. This line was once a B&O passenger line then turned Southern freight that connected in Front Royal. Shortly after the merger of N&W & Southern this line saw double traffic when the flood of 85' wiped out the bridge over the Shenandoah river in Elkton. Traffic was then routed thru this former Southern line pictured above. This loss of the bridge in Elkton was almost certain doom for the CW as it was the only lifeline for CW's connection to N&W's mainline where they picked up their daily revenue freight. As fate had it NS soon realized that this reroute thru the Southern line was far more costly in the long run and invested once again in CW's future and rebuilt the bridge in Elkton. On the down side for the line above, there is no revenue traffic from north of Broadway to south of Strasburg and that part of the line has been mothballed and partly used for storage. |
