Still the Silver Lady and the favorite of passengers after almost two decades, on January 30, 1966, Train 17, the California Zephyr, cruises westward at Rollins, 42 miles out of Denver and 8 miles from the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel on its way to Salt Lake City and Oakland, California. As usual, F9A 5771 is in charge of the 10-car consist, including baggage car, 3 dome cars, a dome buffet-lounge, diner, 3 sleepers, and dome-observation car. A conspicuous addition to head-end power for the past year is 253, one of two PB-1’s gutted and converted into steam generator cars for service on the CZ. The train will make its last full run in 1970, continuing on until 1983 as the Denver-Ogden Rio Grande Zephyr.. The 1959-built 5771 eventually will be relegated to work train service, languish in storage for a dozen years, then go the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, one of the museum’s prize exhibits.
