| Remarks & Notes |
| On a beautiful fall afternoon, Elmore Shifter U94 climbs the stiff 2.0% grade through Loop Junction with tidewater empties for United Coal’s Affinity complex. Seen here exiting the Virginian’s 229’ Loop Tunnel, the train is negotiating the tightest curve on the Winding Gulf at 18°, while spanning the C&O RSW&WG right of way below.
Loop Tunnel is unique in being the only bore on the former Virginian with just one double track portal. This was the result of the junction switch with the two mile long Upper Winding Gulf Branch being inside the tunnel; removed in 1949. |
