Remarks & Notes |
Back in April 1991 I drove up to Big Stone Heights to get this shot of an eastbound CSX coal train coiling over the bridge and onto Norfolk Southern trackage at Big Stone Gap. The business district and most of the residential areas surrounding it are out of the frame below. You can see the NS main line dropping downgrade from Roaring Branch (the "Gap") on the far mountain side. There's a small tunnel through a rock fault there. The long abandoned quarry was served by a rail siding once upon a time named "Harper." You can also see the former L&N main to Norton on the opposite mountain. It was abandoned and removed a few years ago. The head end power for the train (four SD40-2s) can be seen approaching the junction. Some 90 cars back, there are two more SD40-2s shoving on the rear.
This scene is pretty much blocked by trees today. |
