Remarks & Notes
The former International Railways of Central America had fallen on hard times, and the Guatemala Division was nationalized in 1968 as the Ferrocarriles de Guatemala. The IRCA had almost completed dieselization, but nationalization did not solve the railroad's cash shortage and diesels required cash for imported spare parts. The well equipped Guatemala shops could fabricate about anything needed for a steam engine so retired steam engines were returned to service replacing bad order diesels. But the steamers were by and large worn out, so road failures were common. By March 1971 steam had replaced diesels on No. 4, the daily pasajero from Tecun Uman to Guatemala City. Here it has pulled into Escuintla hours late and stopped short of the station to take fuel oil.
