MRL's 840 Local, with two SD70ACe's, passes what was once the small canyon town of Lombard, so named for Milwaukee Road predecessor Montana Railroad's Chief Engineer Arthur B. Lombard.
Located at the junction of the Missouri River (behind) and Sixteenmile Creek (just out of view), Lombard was at one point a bustling little community. Besides a hotel, school, and post office there were two depots, one for the Milwaukee Road and one for the Northern Pacific, along with a small interchange yard. Evidently the Milwaukee even staged helpers here sometimes for the 40-mile climb up Sixteenmile Canyon. Abandoned in the late 1950's, basically all that's left of the town is the Milwaukee's bridge over the Missouri, once part of their electrified mainline to the coast.
One can only imagine what Lombard would be like today if the Milwaukee were still alive...
