Late in the day, a westbound CSX empty hopper train drops downgrade between East Stone Gap and Big Stone Gap, VA, and into what railroaders call Furnace Dip (It got its name from an old iron furnace that once stood about a quarter mile ahead). The engineer has just viewed the advance signal for the junction that will take his train from NS trackage back to his home railroad. The indication is yellow over green---Approach Diverging Route Clear---so it's all going his way. Below, a lad is finishing up an afternoon of fishing in the South Fork of Powell River. Life's good.
