In mid-1996, Burlington Northern Santa Fe was looking for an image to represent the new railroad and had VMV in Paducah paint up former BN SD60M No. 9297 in this experimental scheme, with each side being slightly different. Later that year, the “Heritage I” scheme was born, modified from this test scheme. On July 20, 2003, the locomotive still wore its interesting colors as it sat at Sterling, Colorado.
