Remarks & Notes
Conrail Almost forty years ago on April 1st 1976 the Consolidated Railroad Corporation (Conrail) commenced operations and began returning reliable rail service back to the Northeast. The first few years would be difficult but after deregulation in the 1980s, this railroad would begin turning a profit on a consistent basis up until its 1999 split into CSX and NS. The famous “can opener” logo as it came to be called by railfans was created by Tony Palladino and is intended to depict a pair of wheels rolling along track. While this propulsive logo became famous in the railroad scene, it would not be what this innovative graphic designer was known for. His most famous design work would be the typeface used for 1959 novel and 1960 movie Psycho.
