Remarks & Notes
Southern Railway Appalachia Division mechanical department employees are cleaning up a major coal train derailment in 1968, assisted by heavy equipment from local contractors. The gentleman in the foreground is old-head engineer Jess Mumpower, one of several Mumpower brothers in engine service in the steam and early diesel era. This derailment took place on the St. Charles Branch, and was the result of a runaway down the 3.5 percent grade from Crest.
