Remarks & Notes
There was a time when it was photographically worth the wait until the end of a train came along. Of course today, there's just an EOT hanging on the rear drawhead--hardly an attractive subject. In 1975 L&N caboose 1308 carries the markers on a coal train in a light snow in Big Stone Gap. You know the conductor and flagman are inside, and you also know the oil-fired heater has the cab interior all warm and toasty. This particular cab was constructed from scratch by the L&N in its own South Louisville Shops in 1968--part of a 150-car order from '67-'68 to replace the last of the old wooden cupola cabs. It would later be renumbered to 6308. One wonders if it still survives in a municipal park somewhere. But in 1975, it was still a purposeful non-revenue vehicle doing its job for the L&N Railroad.

Cabooses have always been one of my favorite pieces of railroad equipment. This is just a collection of some of the caboose shots on the site.
