Remarks & Notes
As the sun heads toward the tops of the hills, L&N 865 makes a late afternoon passage through Pennington Gap, VA (or "Pennington" on the railroad). At the time, this was still an open train order station. The branch to St. Charles, VA came off just to the right, a line served by the tri-weekly CV Local. The train order semaphore was replaced by a color light signal in the mid-'70s---just in time for the wooden depot to be burned to the ground in 1976. A small metal structure replaced it, however, and the agency remained open until the late '80s.
