A northbound empty unit train coils through the "Narrows" north of Morley, TN and near Jellico. Just north of this point a southbound troop train behind L-1 Mountain 418 jumped the track on a stiff curve just south of Highcliff and plunged into the Clear Fork River in 1944. The train was carrying new recruits to basic training. Thirty four were either killed immediately, or died from their injuries, while another 75 were injured. It was one of the worst passenger train derailments in the US during WWII, and certainly one of the worst on the L&N, which until then had a sterling safety record.
