The old trestle across the South Fork of Powell River in the middle of the big horseshoe curve through East Stone Gap, VA was still mostly a pile of sticks in 1986, but with some steel beams between each wooden bent to help shore it up. The concrete caps mark the steel supports. In earlier days, engine crews swore you could feel the structure sway. Today, it's an all-steel trestle with a ballast deck. On this day, though, a Seaboard System coal train throttles up on the 1.8 percent grade as it assaults Oreton Hill. This is NS trackage (former Southern).
