The calm piece of another summer day in the Feather River Canyon is broken by a familiar yet almost forgotten pulse of a EMD 567 series prime mover and the colors of the fallen Western Pacific railroad. Preserved and carefully maintained at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA WP GP20 #2001, the first graduate of its class to leave La Grange, IL back in 1959, was granted permission to escort Amtrak's westbound Feather River Express from its home in Portola to Oroville, CA at the western most end of the Canyon Subdivision. With Western Pacific's often used marketing tool, the Feather River, forming an almost glass like calm the WP 2001 led special heads down the Canyon near the old station of Cresta. Soon regularity will return to the Canyon and the WP again a happy memory.
