L&N's first six-motor power came in 1964 in the form of the Alco C628, such as the 1407, shown at Corbin's old back shop. The units were the first new power on the L&N with dynamic braking. Alas, the 1407's existence would be brief. She was destroyed--along with six other units--in a horrific head-on collision at Amherst, TN (north of Knoxville) in 1969. Ironically, the 1407 appeared before my camera more than any other L&N C628 in the '60s---almost as if she wanted to make sure she was remembered. RIP L&N 1407.
