Although I never saw any of the seventy-six 'D49s' turn a wheel in BR days, as an eleven year old in 1960, I can clearly remember my excitement at seeing two of them 'stored' (with sacks over their chimneys) in the semi-derelict old North Eastern Railway roundhouse at the south end of York station. This was the prize awaiting my quite reckless and illicit scamper across the running lines to see if anything might be lurking in the magical gloom of the crumbling building. They disappeared for scrap shortly afterward. Little did I think I'd ever see one again, let alone fully restored and in working order and certainly not in the finery of it's British Railways lined passenger livery. Of such things are dreams made and I hope my portrait does her some small justice.
