Remarks & Notes
A few minutes past 9am C&EI E7 27 leads train #4, the northbound Danville Flyer, appropriately escorted by another flyer through 21st Street interlocking minutes from arrival at Dearborn Station. 21st Street tower is to the right and the Canal St. drawbridge over the Chicago River is seen in the open position above the train. The Danville Flyer, in essence a long-distance commuter train by this date making one round trip daily between Danville and Chicago, is the last remaining passenger train on the C&EI and consists of two coaches and a buffet lounge. The E7 began life as C&EI 1100 in May, 1946 as their first E unit, and was renumbered C&EI 27 under Missouri Pacific control in May 1967. Records indicate that it became L&N 799 in February, 1968, but is obviously still carrying the MP/C&EI buzzsaw herald and number 27 here in early 1969, likely due to L&N shop forces having not yet found time to get her into the paint shop.
