The "Daylight"--ex-Southern Pacific GS-4 number 4449--had completed American Freedom Train duties, and was working her way back home to Seattle. Along the way, the big engine ran a few trips on Southern Railway, including this southbound return trip of a Birmingham to Chattanooga excursion. Here, the 4449 is approaching old Wauhatchie Tower, south of Chattanooga, with her "father"--Doyle McCormick--at the throttle. Alerted by the train order signal at a 45 degree angle (pick up orders "on the fly"), the Southern RFE is leaning out to snag the Clearance Form A and Form 19 TO from the operator as several railfan photographers are poised with their 35mm SLRs at the ready. Were you there?
