The two remaining operational Elk River Railroad locomotives, #3 and #1, lead a train of 50 empty coal cars north from the small yard at Gassaway to Gilmer Station. A slight rain is falling and the train is struggling on the wet, rust covered rails as it climbs out of the Elk River Valley to Pembrooke Tunnel.
