In 1971, the desperately power short Clinchfield elected to go outside of EMD, which had made up their entire roster, to attain new power. They went to GE, which delivered the first 7 U36C's ever produced. The units worked well, however, in 1977, in an effort to maintain an all EMD roster, the railroad elected to trade all 7 of the U36C's to Seaboard Coast Line for an equal number of SD45's. The SD45's were not fully repainted, and instead were just renumbered in the next available number in the 3600 series (which represented how many horsepower the units had), starting at 3625.
