And now the climax of my morning at Raton Pass, the
passage of the all-room, extra-fare Super Chief, " The
Train of the Stars", seen here on a curve just north of the Dick Wootton Ranch. The "Train
of the Stars" was so designated, since it was the acknowledged transportation
mode of choice for the social elite traveling from Chicago
to Los Angeles. Its clientele included former presidents
Reagan,Truman and Eisenhower and their wives and many movie stars including Richard Burton, Elizabeth
Taylor, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and
Paul Newman. If you planned to add your name to the
passenger list, you were expected to dress accordingly.
Coat and tie were appropriate apparel for a gentleman passenger. If your journey began in New York, you probably rode the Twentieth Century Limited or the
Broadway Limited and could remain in your Pullman
while it was added to the consist in Chicago.
