| The famous 'IT57' steam-hauled special on 11th August 1968 drew to a close 143 years of steam locomotive hauled passenger traffic on the British railway network. Known colloquially from the charge made to those fortunate passengers as 'the 15 Guinea Special', a pair of Stanier 'Black 5s' were the motive power. In a remarkable celebration of that auspicious occasion, a similar pairing were available to re-enact that sad but inevitable day 45 years ago this week. And what a spectacle 44932 and 45231 made as they powered their way through that same magnificent scenery, the incomparable Yorkshire Dales on the Settle & Carlisle route. |
