Remarks & Notes |
The Impala Platinum Mine is spread out over a large area north of the town of Rustenburg, with its 14 shafts linked to the processing plants by an extensive well maintained electrified rail system (3kV DC). All the electric locomotives on their fleet are the class 8E Bo-Bo's, originally built for the South African Railways by Brown-Boveri / Siemens and assembled at Union Carriage & Wagon in South Africa. On a hazy winter day in the bushveld, Impala's #2 is seen working a train of 12 empty hoppers for loading at No.9 shaft. Photo taken with permission on Tanago's 2013 South Africa tour. |
