Remarks & Notes
When Salt Lake City hosted three long distance trains per day, a switch engine was on hand to add or subtract cars from the California Zephyr. Amtrak SW1 #736, nicknamed 'Lil' Toot', gleams in the morning sun after subtracting cars from the Pioneer and Desert Wind trains on April 22, 1989. ‘Lil’ Toot’ was built in January 1942 for the New York Central. It would later toil for both the Ohio Central and the Penn Central before beginning its career with Amtrak. After working in Utah for a few years, it was transferred to shuttle coaches in Oakland, California until retirement in 2001.
