Canadian National train No. 117 passes the ferry at Little Fort running through Boulder, British Columbia, on July 21, 2011. The Little Fort Ferry is a reaction ferry across the North Thompson River which is actually propelled by the current of the water. An overhead cable is suspended from towers anchored on either bank of the river, and a "traveller" is installed on the cable, with the ferry attached to the traveller by a bridle cable. To operate the ferry, rudders are used to angle the pontoons into the current, causing the force of the current to move the ferry across the river. The 100 meter crossing takes 5 minutes, is free of tolls, and runs on demand between 7:00 a.m. and 6:20 p.m., with a maximum capacity of 2 cars and 12 passengers at a time.
