Remarks & Notes
Only five of the intended one hundred class 39-000 diesels were rebuilt by Transnet Rail Engineering from class 34-600 and 34-800 locomotives, before the project was abandoned in favour of building new locomotives. Four of the 5 class 39's are seen here eastbound at Capital Park in Pretoria on a sunny winter morning, teamed up to move a block load of limestone. Loco 39-001 is in the blue Spoornet livery, while the others are all painted in the newer TFR red livery. Photograph taken during Tanago's recent South Africa railfan tour.
