Competing modes of transportation move north under the Bear Mountain Bridge. There are 4 bridges seen from this vantage point with the smallest being the Popolopen Creek suspension bridge that carries the Appalachian Trail across the water. During the revolution, a pontoon bridge was built near the same location that connected two forts that protected the Hudson River from the British.
