Remarks & Notes
The Milwaukee Road at the time of this photo was three years from the closing of Lines West and eight years from the end. The Milwaukee was experiencing one of the most devastating winters in the history of the entire RR. Taken from the 35th street viaduct the view shows a cross section of the railroad equipment in need of serious repair. This state of disrepair and gloom was being experienced not only in its namesake town but in countless terminals throughout the Milwaukee's entire 10,500 mile system.

These are engines that are either already scrapped, are in deadlines, or they're in severe danger of being scrapped. Not everything can be preserved.

There are times when many engines, cars or cabooses are concentrated in a location. Such sites are for storage, economic reasons, active power needs or for rebuilding. For others, wear and tear have brought their usefulness to and end.
