One Shot: On a cross country road trip from Maine to Montana in 2010, I decided to take a detour through Utah for two reasons. One, I had never seen the desert. And two, I wanted to shoot one of those bizarre but awesome Utah Railway MK5000s. On Aug. 16, I spent the better part of the day in Helper waiting for something - anything! - to run, but I was having little luck. Finally, late in the afternoon, a Union Pacific coal train headed west. It turned out to be a great chase up and over Soldier Summit and although I didn't get to see one of those MK5000s, I was pleased with the day... Or so I thought. After taking my last photo, I turned west on U.S. Route 6, bound for Montana, when suddenly an eastbound train rounded the curve about a mile in front of me. There was no question what was on the point of the train as I flipped my 1992 Chevy Lumina and punched the gas east toward Colton for my one and only Utah Railway shot.
