Remarks & Notes
On a lovely May afternoon in 1968, L&N train 865 arrives at the top of the Hagans switchback with the first cut of its train. This half will be doubled over to the "old CV" main on the right--the original Corbin to Norton main line that was opened to through traffic in 1891. The switchback was opened in 1930, and thereafter all through freights used it (via Loyall and Harlan). Pennington roadmaster J.R. Robinson is riding the front end today to check out the track on his section of the division. Typical for the time, he's wearing a spiffy brimmed Stetson--an essential piece of the "uniform" for any railroad official. After the first cut is in place here, the C628-U25C tandem will return to the bottom at Smiley, get the rear end of the train, and bring it up. After arriving at the top of the switchback again, the front end will be set over to the rear, recoupled, and after a quick air test---number 865 will highball for Norton. This was, and still is, the only mainline switchback in the U.S.

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
