A Grand Centennial for Grand Central. While every visitor to this treasured piece of railroad history always seems to go for this very photo, today was something special. At 12:00 AM on February 1st, 1913, the New York Central unveiled one of the most iconic railroad buildings in the world. Exactly one hundred years later, the terminal still stands as strong and elegant as it did upon its completion. Today saw many festivities in and around the main concourse, including appearances by Mayor Bloomberg, Keith Hernandez, and descedents of Cornelius Vanderbilt, as well as 1913-priced food items throughout the complex, and numerous exhibits reflecting the building's history. A great time was had for all who were present, and seeing New York take such serious pride in its architecture after a couple of shaky decades in the last century gives a strong indication that the city anxiously anticipates the 200th anniversary.
