A blast of the horn carries for miles across the sandhills of North Carolina, but the sound of the locomotive bell - that means you're close. The hurried clang-clang-clang, rising in pitch as it approaches, rising further then falling as it passes, that's the sound of movement, of switching maneuvers, of action! In the hour before dawn, this high-hood GP7 sits in silence as the moon circles 'round overhead. But soon the moon will give way to the sun, and the air will once again be filled with the sounds of railroading - the roar of the diesel, the creaking of weathered ties, the squeal of steel wheels on jointed rail, and the clang-clang-clang of the bell keeping perfect time.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
Generally speaking, shots where less than a full engine is shown. But I want to feature details, not half engines or full cabs, and definitely not full nose shots. Just shots where someone has zoomed in with purpose.
