Union Pacific’s westbound local enters Battle Mountain, Nevada, on March 11, 2004. On the point is UP No. 3254, a snoot-nosed EMD SD40-2 built in June 1974, that was in service as UP 8014 from 1976 to 1981. These 8000-series SD40-2s were regeared for high-speed service during those particular years and frequently operated with DDA40Xs in this capacity.
