Remarks & Notes
Union Pacific #844 lead the 150th Anniversary special across the North Platte River at Fort Steele. This train was bound for Rock Spring, WY for the night with the final destination of Sacramento, CA. Historical Note: Fort Steele was built in 1868 to guard the workers of the Transcontinental Railroad from Indian attacks. After the railroad was finished, the fort continued to guard the crucial Union Pacific crossing of the North Platte until 1886 when the government decommissioned the fort. Nowadays the fort and surrounding ghost town is part of the Wyoming State Parks system.
