As another year draws to a close, the semaphore signals at five of the stations on the Free State main line remain operational, despite rumours of their replacement. Late on a Sunday afternoon, the southbound "Amatola" from Johannesburg to East London speeds through Rooiwal on the Down main, passing the starter signals for the Up main and Up loop. The Down main home signal can just be seen above the third passenger coach.
