Remarks & Notes

In a rare scene from the early days of color photography, Southern Ps-class Pacific 1244 is shown at the roundhouse at Savannah, Georgia in 1938. The 1910 Baldwin is all spiffed up in green, silver and yellow-gold lettering and striping. So typical of the attention given Southern passenger power in this era, the top cylinders of the two one-lung air compressors have green jacketing and brass bands for trim. The boiler check valve is freshly silvered, along with the smokebox, cylinder and valve head covers, and pilot trim. An unusual touch is the tall stack—which is painted black above the cast base (which is silver). And while the 1244 was already 28 years old when this image was recorded, she has been accorded some mechanical upgrades, including Universal steam chests with piston valves to replace her original slide valves, and Walschaerts valve gear (replacing her original Stephenson). Another improvement not seen: she’s superheated. However—for all her good looks, the 1244 will succumb to the scrapper in 1946—but only after helping pull the incredible load of passengers handled by the Southern during World War II.
