Mudhen Kit.....some assembly required. The locomotive depicted in this photo is Denver & Rio Grande Western #463, a type K-27 Mikado built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903. This locomotive is one of just two surviving examples of a class of 15 such engines, which are affectionately called "Mudhens". Originally constructed as Vauclain compound engines, these locomotives had two cylinders on each side. Early in their service lives, the old D&RG decided that the extra cylinders weren't worth the extra costs of maintenance, and they were converted to simple expansion locomotives. They served the D&RG and later the D&RGW, in mixed and freight service, over their entire narrow gauge system. This particular one later served the Rio Grande Southern before being sold into private hands. She was donated to the City of Antonito, Colorado and became part of the collection on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which is jointly owned by the States of Colorado and New Mexico. She operated in tourist service on this line from 1994 to 2002, before being sidelined with a number of mechanical problems. In 2009, the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec began an effort to restore this locomotive, for use on special excursions and charters. Over the course of the past couple of years, the boiler and running gear have been overhauled, and a new cab has been constructed. Both The Friends and the C&TS had hoped to have her operational for the 2012 season, but other needs and priorities intervened. She currently sits in the Antonito Engine House, awaiting final assembly and test. All parties concerned are hopeful that the C&TS shop forces will have some time during the winter of 2012-2013 to get this little gal back out on the rails, where she will surely be a popular draw among rail enthusiasts.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
